The first look at Michael Fassbender in Ubisoft Motion Pictures’ Assassin’s Creed adaptation has been revealed, and it’s dark and glorious. If you’re wondering just which assassin from the games Fassbender will be playing, here’s your answer: he’s not. Fassbender’s character is named Callum Lynch, a new protagonist created specifically for the movie adaptation. Not to worry though. The name may be new, but the core story about a modern man who uses cutting-edge technology to reach back to his assassin ancestors is still the same.
The image looks great, even if it’s just a static look at Fassbender in his heavily textured assassin’s garb, complete with Assassin’s Creed emblem sewn onto his hood and deadly wrist blades extended for battle. Also starring Academy Award-winner Marion Cotillard, Assassin’s Creed is directed by Justin Kurzel and produced by New Regency, Ubisoft Motion Pictures, DMC Films and Kennedy/Marshall. Distributor 20th Century Fox will release Assassin’s Creed in theaters worldwide on December 21st, 2016.
Here’s the film’s official synopsis:
Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.
It’s not quite clear at this point just how much time Fassbender will split on screen between Lynch and Aguilar, or if the story itself is set during the Spanish Inquisition, but the Aguilar name should be familiar to fans of the video game. Though that particular Aguilar was a surname for a Spanish Templar – a faction who opposes the Assassins – Fassbender’s ancestral character in the movie having a similar name is an interesting tie in. We can expect to see much more from this anticipated adaptation over the next year, but until then we’ll just have to speculate.
